Music copyright is extremely complex, mostly because it breaks down into various different rights that are administered by different parties.

While SOCAN is a major copyright collective, it administers the public performance (eg live performance) and communication to the public (eg broadcasting) rights of music authors, composers and music publishers. They're the people you talk to if you want to perform or broadcast music.

If you want to record a CD, what you need is permission to make a reproduction of the musical works you want to record. This permission is called a "mechanical" license (eg a license to make a copy of a musical work onto physical media), and these licenses are granted by the Canadian Musical Reproduction Rights Association (CMRRA). Their webiste is http://www.cmrra.ca

A useful summary of mechanical licensing which will help explain this process can be found at http://www.cmrra.ca/cmrradocs/mlbe06.pdf

I hope this helps. Good luck!

A good place to start is to contact Society of Composers, Authors, and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN), which is linked below. Another, possibly less desirable option, would be to contact the music publishers and artists directly.http://www.socan.ca/
