If I Record A Video Of Me Playing Runescape And Post It Online, Am I Violating A Copyright Law?

Posted by Copyright Law Enquirer on July 16th, 2009 at 04:27pm

I was playing Runescape and I found that a macroer was abusing a bug in Jagex’s system to get lots of genie random events. I shot a video of it with Hypercam2 and I put it on google video so I could chow people and find out what was going on with this guy. I just recieved an email today that says the video has been taken down because it is a copyright violation. I did not add music or anything. I only shot the video, and put it online without adding or taking anything away from it. Can I file a complaint to google about this or is it against copyright law to make a video of runescape without Jagex’s permission? I have dozens of other Runescape videos online but none of them have been taken down for copyright law. I am very confused and wish someone could enlighten me about this. Thank you.

Actually, it technically IS copyright law, as you did not have Jagex LTD.’s permission to post it, and more than likely, google administrators did not see any credit given towards Jagex LTD, and since it’s technically their content still, it counts.
YouTube never takes them down though, because Andrew Gower hasn’t contacted them about it, most likely because it gives the game publicity, but if they did contact YouTube about it, then YouTube would have to take the videos down.
If you want to look through the copyright law for the US, go to the first listed site, if you want for the UK, go to the second. Be warned, though, it’s a long long long document.
Also, in the UK copyright document, there is this section I want to direct you to:
    “Restricted acts
It is an offence to perform any of the following acts without the consent of the owner:
    Copy the work.
Rent, lend or issue copies of the work to the public.
Perform, broadcast or show the work in public.
    Adapt the work.
The author of a work, or a director of a film may also have certain moral rights:
The right to be identified as the author.
Right to object to derogatory treatment.”
(The above section is property of Copyright Witness Ltd.)
