Personal profit is not the only consideration. There is also the consideration of damage to another person’s property rights in their own image.

Yes, you need to receive permission from the author and make sure to cite that it is his in a web site or any other document that you are creating.

Just ask the 12-year-old girl who got sued by the RIAA.
Simply linking to someone else’s image, on their own site, isn’t, because you’re not posting it on your site.
If you take that person’s image, without their consent, and post it on your site, without giving them credit, then, yes. It’s infringement.

It doesn’t matter if you profit financially for you to get into trouble. You might not be sued for damages (I’m not a lawyer) but you could be ordered to take the image off your Website. If the owner feels that your use of the image was for a purpose he didn’t agree with he could feel you damaged him. If this Webpage of yours is for a school project you could face plagiarism charges if you don’t say where you got the image. It is best to ask for permission and say where you got the image somewher on your site unless it is an image that is in the public domain.
