Music Copyright Laws On Dedicating A Song?

Posted by Copyright Law Enquirer on July 13th, 2009 at 04:26am

I want to start a new website and I wish to have a ‘dedicate a song’ feature for the members registered on my site. Will I land up in legal trouble on copyright issues?

You need some sort of license to play or distribute the music. If you’re just listing song titles you’re ok, if you can actually hear the song via your website you are breaking copyright.
But the internet is also a very big place, so take your chances.
This is of course assuming the Website is hosted in North America or Europe. The rest of the world, I don’t know about.
Find a service provider in Africa, that’s what the Pirate Bay did.

Under the Copyright Act 1957 sections and various rules — any artistic performance which can be music dance or painting shown to the public with the intention of making out profit or for commercial purpose does comes under the copyright laws.
Now the second big music companies will come to know about their music being played at a web-site they will straight go to the court for stoping your website and also for seizing and taking physical possession of all electronic equipments used for that website.
so you will have to take permission form all companies like T-series or HMV or other music companies whose music you wannaa play.
Other wise you can be criminally held liable under Section 63 and 65 of the Copyrigt act.

You can already dedicate a song to your loved ones on singamore.com. Whats more you can do that with a version of the song recorded in your own voice and its for bollywood music lovers.

You need to ask permission before sharing any music that you haven’t purchased yourself because yes it can be taken down as copyright. Good luck.
